George Hatzimarkos, the Governor of South Aegean, was born in Rhodes.
In 1997, he was involved in community politics, when he got elected to the position of Financial Supervisor on the Five-Member Direction Committee of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CCI) of Dodecanese. In 2001, he was reelected, and acceding to the office of Vice-President of the CCI of the Dodecanese. In 2006, he was elected President of the Chamber and he remained at office until the 31 st of December 2010, date on which he chose to resign, as at the 2010 Municipal Ballot he entered the race for the office of Mayor of the Municipality of Rhodes, as head of the bill of the independent municipal movement dubbed “Rhodos Mprosta” (Rhodes Ahead), eventually obtaining 42.3% of the votes.
In May 2014, he got elected Governor of the South Aegean Region with the independent region movement “Mprosta to Notio Aigaio” (South Aegean Ahead). The Region of South Aegean consists of the Cyclades and Dodecanese island groups. From the end of May 2016 he was the President of the CPMR (Conference of Peripheral Maritime Regions of Europe) until May 2017. From 2014 to 2019, he was a member of the Board of Directors and member of the Executive Committee in the Association of Greek Regions.
He reelected in May 2019, since the first round of the local government elections, until present. In 2019, he got the position of the President of the Committee of Tourism in the Association of Greek Regions until 2023. For the same period, he continues also as a member of the Board of Directors in the Association. In January 2020, he became a member of the National Delegation of Greece in the European Committee of the Regions, in the Commissions of CIVEX (Commission for Citizenship, Governance, Institutional and External affairs) and NAT (Commission for Natural Resources), until 2025.
In 2020, he was also elected President in the Solid Waste Management Authority of South Aegean. The same year, he was elected President of «K2» the Development Enterprise of South Aegean Region established in 2020.
